Whenever you get tips to lower auto insurance premiums from insurers, it’s good to heed their words, which is why we’re bringing you some safe driving tips from non-profit auto insurer Citizens United Reciprocal Exchange (CURE). The organization is dedicated to providing insurance solutions for responsible drivers, as well as solving continuously evolving auto insurance problems.

As a part of its effort, it has offered some ways to help you stay say on the roads during the winter, which could in turn help you avoid accidents that are not only costly insurance-wise, but also threaten lives of you and others on the road.

Tip #1 – Check your shoes: The first tip is to make sure you remove ice and snow from your shoes before getting in your car. This helps to avoid fogging the windows, as well as stops your shoes from slipping off of the foot pedals.

Tip #2 – Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps or shady spots: CURE recommends that drivers slow down in areas such as these because even though they may look free of ice and snow, they may contain black ice. In these areas, you could easily run into other cars, off the road, or into pedestrians.

Tips 3 – Don’t pass snow plows or sanding trucks: You may be tempted to speed by a snow plow or sanding truck because they move so slow, but it’s best to fight this temptation. Because they have limited visibility and the road ahead of them is probably worse than what’s behind, you may find yourself in more danger if you don’t wait.

Tip #4 – Remove snow and ice from your car before driving: By removing the ice and snow before driving, you help your visibility and increase your safety. CURE reminds you to remove the snow and ice from the roof as well because it can slide as the car warms up and fly into other cars.

Tip #5 – Check your exhaust pipe: Before starting the car, make sure to check your exhaust pipe to make sure it isn’t blocked with ice and snow. If it’s blocked, it could force deadly carbon monoxide gas to leak into the car while the engine is running.

There’s nothing more important than your safety when on the road, especially in the dangerous winter months. So before hitting the roads, be sure to follow these tips. Also check for auto insurance tips from Go Insurance Rates.
