A new report from the American Automobile Association (AAA) spells out the many ways that the cost of owning a car has increased and at the top of the list was auto insurance. According to the association, not only did auto insurance rates increase, but they played a major role in why owning a car is much more expensive than it used to be.

New figures from the CarInsurance.com Premium Index show that the cost of car insurance in the U.S. averaged $1,570 annually in March 2010. While this number may seem a bit high for some, it actually reflects an average that shows a decrease in auto insurance premiums for most states as compared to the same time last year.

Lawmakers in West Virginia are pushing for an electronic insurance system to help courts and police professionals quickly verify if a driver has minimum insurance liability insurance specified by the state. While the measure has yet to go through, it has the backing of the state Senate and has been approved by the House.

The Maryland legislature rejected a bill that would have imposed a ban on the use of credit information in rating auto insurance. Reports show that the legislation failed to even reach full chambers of both Houses of the Maryland legislature, being rejected within the Senate Finance Committee and House Economic Matters Committee.
