A 2010 report from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) revealed that only 45 percent of Americans are confident that they understand their auto and health insurance policies.

The auto insurance industry has landed in the spotlight over accusations of discrimination against middle and low-income households. A new study backed by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) says the industry regularly distributes high-priced policies to individuals with less money, making it difficult for them to improve their lives financially.

A controversial California auto insurance initiative has made its way back to the November ballot in California after facing opposition. The initiative, if passed, would provide an auto insurance discount to individuals who maintained continuous auto coverage while penalizing drivers who allowed their insurance to lapse.

Allstate Insurance, in an effort to find an edge over its competition, is promising its customers a money-back guarantee if they’re not satisfied with their auto insurance claims service. This enticing refund option was successfully tested in four states last year and now has been expanded to dozens throughout the country.

Auto insurance claims are on the rise across the country according to a new report released by the Insurance Research Council (IRC). The report, issued this week, found that the increase in costs is reversing previous trends of relatively stable costs that have even declined in some cases.

Mercury Insurance Group is seeking permission from the California Department of Insurance to raise auto insurance rates by $89 million. Simultaneously, the insurer is seeking to take part in a 2012 initiative to give discounts to drivers who never let their car insurance lapse, which Consumer Watchdog says is not a coincidence.

Implementing nationwide restrictions on teenage driving could save 2,000 lives and billions of dollars each year, says a new study conducted by insurance and safety advocates. It’s for this reason that the report, released by the National Safety Council, a congressionally-chartered independent research agency, called for a national standard in teenage driving laws, also known as “graduated driver licensing” or GDL.
