What sort of benefits can you expect from your employer’s health insurance plan? A lot of what you can expect from your benefits package depends upon what sort of plan you or your employer have purchased, such as a group health plan or an individual health care plan. But in general, your health insurance benefits will be whatever medical care is covered under your health policy. This would include any type of care that is either directly paid for by your group health plan, reimbursed to you, or otherwise paid by your health insurance plan. Most health insurance plans cover basic medical care such as a doctor visits and hospitalization (subject to your deductible, any co-payments or out of pocket maximum limits).

When it comes to health care in the United States, managed care insurance programs are the preference for the vast majority of people with health insurance. People over 65 might qualify for Medicare, and people making less than a certain amount of money could qualify for Medicaid, but by and large, the biggest players in the health insurance game are managed care programs. Of the managed care programs, three of the most basic and best known are health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs), and point-of-service plans (POS).

For working couples, is it better to have two insurance plans or one? Well, it really depends on the insurance plans, out-of-pocket costs and other policy options.
For example, if you both get a complimentary health insurance plan as part of your company benefits, you may decide that free health coverage for both is your best option. However, if one of you works for a larger company than the other, the costs for the individual may be better if the person working for the smaller company jumps onto the group plan of the spouse working for the larger corporation.

In the long run, it is important to have some type of health care coverage whether through an employer or on your own. If you have the option between the two, there are some key differences between the two types of policies you should be aware of.
Cost may be one of the biggest factors when deciding between private health insurance and group health insurance. Depending on the size of the company you work for and the rate they negotiated for their group policy, you may get a better financial deal through your job instead of opting for an individual private health insurance policy.
