Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is strengthening its attempts to offer low-cost medical services to individuals through its in-store clinics, according to a new report from the American Medical Association (AMA). However, the major retailer’s project is facing challenges as a result of health industry regulations.

While Medicare beneficiaries know that open enrollment is ending earlier this year, most are not planning to shop for new health care plans, according to a study by Harris Interactive for Longevity Alliance. Choosing not to shop around is a mistake, says the study, since doing so offers the opportunity to save money on coverage.

House representatives are set to vote on a bill that will scale back the Medicaid expansion set forth in the health care reform law. Experts say scaling back the bill could prevent as many as 1 million middle-income Americans from qualifying for Medicaid coverage.

The Obama administration and its challengers are taking their fight to the Supreme Court to address the the ongoing debate over whether the health care reform law should be deemed constitutional. The debates have been pushed through various circuit courts around the country over the past year, but the fight may reach its final destination in a few short weeks if filings are approved in time.

Abortions, which were a major issue in health care reform before it passed last year, have taken precedence again in Congress. The House passed legislation this week that bars an insurance plan regulated under the new law from covering abortion of any if its customers receive federal subsidies.

Nearly two dozen states are in support of a challenge to the health care reform law presented by Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder. The states all believe the law, passed in March 2010, is unconstitutional because it requires people to purchase health insurance.

Health care experts say that the Medicare and Medicaid budget cuts that have been proposed by lawmakers to resolve the debt ceiling issue would only shift health costs, not eliminate them, according to a new Wall Street Journal story. So far, abut $350 billion in cuts have been proposed to the two programs over the next 10 years, but most think these government savings would actually become new costs for others.

The nation’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, recently announced it will provide free legal support for Medicaid patients and their families. This is the first time in the company’s history that it will be interacting with the government’s public health insurance system in this way.
