Those who are vehemently opposed the health insurance reform should reevaluate their position.

Even if they feel safe, courtesy of their current medical benefits, a job loss, illness or any number of reasons can cause them to lose their security blanket and then they too can be in the position of struggling to find affordable health care coverage. When it comes to seeking and acquiring private insurance, providers can turn down one’s application for coverage for several reasons, but it is important to know the legal ins and outs of the system to ensure that they are operating within the currently broken system.

Preexisting conditions

One such reason an applicant can be denied health insurance is if they have a preexisting condition. If you have any history of an illness the insurance provider does not want to deal with (AIDS, cancer and allergies, etc.), a brief letter describing your rejection is going to be the only response you get.

Risky careers

Are you a fire fighter, crop duster or a circus worker? Depending on your career, medical providers can deny you health insurance if they deem your profession too high-risk. Ultimately, it is their job to protect the company bottom line, not your overall health.

Not paying your bill

Like with most businesses, non-payment of premiums is another legal reason for denying you health insurance.

If a person was lucky enough to get approved for private health insurance, it is important to make sure all the premium payments are made on time otherwise, your policy will be canceled and you will be denied health insurance for non-payment.

There’s no excuse for discrimination

Legally, you cannot be denied health care based on discrimination. Factors like age, gender, race and ethnic background are not legal reasons for any health care provider to use.

If they do, you have the law behind you and can make quite a ruckus with a lawsuit.
