Most people get their health insurance through their employer. But for the millions of freelancers, small business owners, unemployed or underemployed workers out there, they are responsible for finding their own coverage. However, finding a plan from a private insurer can be nearly impossible, especially if you have a preexisting condition, work in a high risk job or are on medication. Unfortunately, those are all legal reasons why your application for health care coverage may be rejected.

How to get private health insurance

The first step in getting privately provided health care coverage is by filling out an application where your information is then reviewed by the company’s under writing department. All your demographic factors including your age, gender and health history are reviewed to estimatehow much it will cost to provide you coverage and if the company will actually do so. Each insurance company has it’s own under writing policies, so if insurance A wrongfully denies you coverage, then you need to move on to provider B, C and so forth.

What happens if I’m denied wrongly?

If you are wrongfully denied coverage for such reasons as discrimination, human error or some other glitch in the system, the only thing you can do is carefully document your case and try to file an appeal with the company. Before taking action, it is best to research the health insurance coverage laws of your state of residence as what may stand true in Florida, may be contrary to the system in Arizona.
