Adult day care centers have existed to provide caregivers with a much needed and well earned respite for the daily ins and outs of tending for their elderly parent. Adult day care centers provide therapeutic and health services coupled with social activities. They focus their efforts on tending to the needs of those with dementia, Alzheimer’s, chronic illnesses, brain injuries and other problems that make them unable to be on their own for any period of time.

More and more adult day care centers are springing up around the country as demand for the services increase with the aging of the baby boomer generation. Additionally, funding sources such as Medicaid waiver programs, now support this alternative to other available options out there.

For those individuals who want to be with their aging parents as much as possible, but still need to work, take care of their family or just themselves, adult day care is a viable option to assist with the caring of their elderly loved ones. The benefit is twofold as the person in adult care will be able to get a change of scenery, meet new people and experience new things to keep them both alert and interested.

Different Types of Adult Day Care

There are three basic variety of adult day care centers to choose from:

• Social based adult day care with activities, meals and some health related care
• Health based adult day care providing more intensive health service
• Alzheimers adult day care exclusively for victims of that disease or related dementia
