One of the most important things for new parents to consider is maternity insurance to help protect the health of your unborn child. The cost of doctor visits, prescriptions and the delivery can be astronomical. You should investigate all options for insurance coverage including choosing between a specific supplemental maternity health plan or a regular health policy that covers maternity.
If you are pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant, the time to consider your health insurance options is now. Many regular health insurance providers do offer maternity coverage, but it may take several months of coverage for it to be extended to you and your family.
Since health insurance plans can be so different, soon-to-be parents need to assess the coverage provided by a maternity rider and a policy that already includes maternity health care. Your existing plan may limit the number of doctor visits you can make, the network of doctors you can choose from and how much care you receive after giving birth.
Any easy decision however, is that having any kind of maternity health insurance is better than none at all.
