The total cost of health insurance and related out-of-pocket expenses will require all 2010 retirees to save at least $124,000 to cover 90 percent, according a new report released by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI). The report also found that while costs will likely decrease some as a result of the health care law, the decrease will be nowhere near enough to make up for the amount retired workers–especially women–will have to pay to cover their health care expenses.

High-deductible health plans have become popular for poorer families looking to save money on monthly premiums–the only problem is that the deductibles are so difficult to pay that care is often put off when needed. Based on the findings, which were revealed by a group of U.S. researchers, these types of plans may need to be revamped if they are to be successful in sparing health costs.

Those wanting Medicare benefits for the first time or through renewal can take advantage of open enrollment starting today, but it’s good to know that some changes have been made to the program. Included in those changes is a sharp reduction in the number of Medicare Advantage plans offered to beneficiaries, a move that will help the government phase it out.

Health insurers have managed to see a significant increase in profits, leaving lawmakers to call for a rebate to consumers. In 2010, health insurance companies saw profit increases of 41 percent from the year prior, showing that their continuous pleas for premium increases last year were not due to health care cost increases as stated.

The number of uninsured Americans continues to rise, according to a new report released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control that revealed 59 million went without health insurance for at least part of 2010. The Centers’ stats, released on Tuesday evening, say this number represents a 4 million increase from the previous year.

Californians with no health insurance and preexisting conditions that would otherwise prevent them from obtaining coverage were given a new opportunity on Monday, October 25th with the debut of a new health plan. This new coverage is designed to bridge the former health insurance model with the new one to be revealed in 2014, which will no longer allow insurers to decline coverage to people with preexisting conditions.

After taking 58 seats from Democrats and gaining overwhelming control of the House, some say the GOP can’t wait to make big changes to health care.
