Health insurers in Michigan were ordered to pay policyholders as much $89 million in medical loss ratio rebates following a ruling, federal health regulators announced on Monday. This ruling comes less than one month after the federal government announced that the health insurance industry could owe millions of consumers rebates thanks to health care reform’s medical loss ratio.

A new report released has found both smoking and body mass index (BMI) have a significant impact on a person’s health insurance premium costs. The report, released by eHealth, Inc., the parent company of eHealthInsurance, showed that individuals who smoke or are considered obese can pay up to 23 percent more each month for their coverage.

Recent findings from a Gallup Poll revealed that the number of American adults covered by employer-sponsored health insurance has reached the lowest level since the organization began tracking coverage in 2008. The polling organization found the number of covered adults dropped more than 5 percent over the three-year period.

Federal officials have announced that the Medicare enrollment deadline, which is set to expire today, has been extended through Dec. 10 due to a jump in last-minute sign-ups. However, the officials caution that seniors may only qualify for the extension if they take important steps before the close of business today.

The Obama administration said on Friday it had tweaked a piece of the health care reform law that requires health insurance companies to spend the majority of their premium revenue on medical care, or issue refunds to customers. As a result of many health insurers not following the rules, companies will be required to issue tax-free refunds to customers as required by the law.

A new report issued by Georgetown University Health Policy Institute’s Center for Children and Families revealed that the U.S. health care coverage has increased, specifically for children. In the past three years, children without health insurance has dropped by 1 million. This number also incorporates the increased number of children living in poverty due to the the challenging economy.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is strengthening its attempts to offer low-cost medical services to individuals through its in-store clinics, according to a new report from the American Medical Association (AMA). However, the major retailer’s project is facing challenges as a result of health industry regulations.

A new study has found that U.S. workers’ health insurance premiums rose 63 percent from 2003 to 2010 as an increasing number of employers shifted the burden of rising medical costs to their employees. The study was conducted by Commonwealth Fund, which analyzed annual government surveys of companies.
