The 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta issued a ruling last week that the mandate in the health care reform law that requires all adults purchase health insurance is unconstitutional. The ruling came months after the Obama administration appealed a previous ruling in hopes of garnering support from judges to support the law.

Starting this fall, Walgreens, the nation’s largest drugstore chain, is expected to begin selling health insurance to customers. The insurance products, which will be available from coast-to-coast through a private health insurance exchange, will come with different price ranges and coverage levels.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced on Thursday that Medicare participants are expected to see a drop in prescription costs next year. Medicare Part D, which is a portion of the health insurance program specifically dedicated to prescription benefits, will see costs decline slightly from 2011.

A new study conducted by researchers at the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire found that more U.S. children are being covered by public health insurance plans. Researchers say this is occurring because unemployment is still high and parents are losing their private coverage, qualifying them for public assistance.

The Obama administration is making plans to take over review of health insurance rates in 10 states. This decision was made after determining officials are not doing a good enough job regulating premiums sold to individuals and small businesses.

Nearly two dozen states are in support of a challenge to the health care reform law presented by Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder. The states all believe the law, passed in March 2010, is unconstitutional because it requires people to purchase health insurance.

Health care experts say that the Medicare and Medicaid budget cuts that have been proposed by lawmakers to resolve the debt ceiling issue would only shift health costs, not eliminate them, according to a new Wall Street Journal story. So far, abut $350 billion in cuts have been proposed to the two programs over the next 10 years, but most think these government savings would actually become new costs for others.

The nation’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, recently announced it will provide free legal support for Medicaid patients and their families. This is the first time in the company’s history that it will be interacting with the government’s public health insurance system in this way.

A new law in Georgia will allow state-licensed health insurance companies to sell policies offered across the nation that provide less coverage than the state requires. The new law is set to take effect on July 1 and is said to be among the first of its kind to be offered in the United States.
