The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to ban federal grant money meant to help states set up health exchanges. The 238-183 vote, which was primarily along party lines and strongly objected by President Barack Obama, was a part of Republicans’ continued push to dismantle health care reform.

Californians with no health insurance and preexisting conditions that would otherwise prevent them from obtaining coverage were given a new opportunity on Monday, October 25th with the debut of a new health plan. This new coverage is designed to bridge the former health insurance model with the new one to be revealed in 2014, which will no longer allow insurers to decline coverage to people with preexisting conditions.

California officially became the first state to form a health insurance exchange beginning this week. Upon Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signing two key health bills on Thursday, health insurance options for the state may now widen for both small businesses and millions of uninsured individuals.
