Today’s News: Fed Moving to Improve Health Insurance Appeals, Life Settlements Have High Fees and Nationwide Insurance Surprises Thieves with Bait Vehicles

The Fed took its first step on July 22 to ensure consumers who want to file a health insurance appeal have a neutral party to speak with. In other insurance news, research shows that life insurance settlements have high fees and Nationwide Insurance has been surprising auto thieves with their new bait vehicles.

Fed Works to Improve Health Insurance Appeals

The Obama administration has taken the first step necessary to make sure consumers are treated fairly if they are denied a medical claim by their health insurance company. The regulations will be spelled out in a two-step process.

First, consumers will appeal directly to their insurers. Two, if they are denied a second time, they will work with an independent reviewer for which health plans must pay the costs. Unfortunately, the new federal safeguards won’t be immediately available to most Americans with private coverage since the overhaul law is so much more complicated than previous health insurance laws (Associated Press).

Life Settlements Have High Fees

Cashing out on life insurance policies, also known as taking out a life settlement, has become very popular over the years because it allows senior citizens to sell their policies to investors for thousands of dollars, while the investors receive the full payout after the original policyholder dies.

However, according to the Government Accountability Office, taking part in this practice may be risky for both sellers and buyers due to inconsistent regulation and excessive fees. In particular, senior citizens could get less than they should for their policies (Bloomberg).

Nationwide Insurance Surprises Thieves with Bait Vehicles

Houston law enforcement has partnered with Nationwide Insurance to keep residents safe from the increase of auto theft in the area. To assist with the goals of various policy and sheriff departments, Nationwide has presented bait vehicles (unmarked cars outfitted with special GPS tracking and remote-control immobilizing equipment) that allow officers to monitor cars that have been seized by thieves without the need for a vehicle pursuit.

According to Nationwide, vehicle theft rates have dropped in almost every region where the auto insurance company has placed vehicles. So far, over 55 bait vehicles are in service or in progress in 17 states (Business Wire).

Nationwide Educational Campaign to Prevent Driver’s Distractions

Nationwide Insurance is sponsoring a national press campaign aimed at preventing driving distractions. Cell phones, book reading, eating bowls of cereal, text messaging and putting on makeup are only some of the risky behaviors drivers participate in instead of keeping their eyes on the road.

NASCAR drivers Brad Keselowski and Stephen Leicht are the national spokespeople for the educational campaign. Their platform of minimizing distractions is backed up by a hands on demonstration where using a NASCAR driving simulator, young drivers got to experience what impact text messaging has on their driving abilities. According the Leicht, the Nationwide Insurance program “Really wakes drivers up about what can go wrong from sending a simple text message instead of focusing on driving.”

This touring educational program will have no effects on the Nationwide insurance premiums their policyholders pay for car insurance coverage.

To tighten their bottom line, Nationwide Insurance is no longer going to provide insurance coverage options for the North Carolina mobile-home, renters, condo and overall dwelling markets. The hardest hit of those covered are mobile home residents as Nationwide Insurance is no longer writing those policies at all and will begin phasing out existing policies onOct. 3, 2009 continuing through Oct. 2, 2010.

Traditional Policies Unaffected

Mobile homes covered under traditional homeowners policies with Nationwide insurance rates will not be affected. Nationwide is working with local insurance providers to find alternative means of policy coverage for those who will be affected by the change.

August 31, 2009 was when Nationwide stopped writing new policies for renters, condos and other dwellings, specifically related to fire policies. Those who already have a Nationwide policy will not be impacted by this change.

Who doesn’t love summer? Extra hours of daylight, tons of sunshine and several holiday weekends provide extra time for lounging and playing. Some people may want to spend all the extra time on the water, and others may want to cruise on land, and depending on the toys you have, ensuring you have the proper insurance company can make all the difference. Nationwide Insurance is one of the great providers offering specialty coverage.

Boating can be great fun! By covering your water vehicle with Nationwide insurance rates, you can find coverage forspeedboats, motorboats or pleasure boats. In some cases, smaller boats are covered by homeowners insurance against liability and damage, however that is not always the case and a separate policy may be needed.

Another toy that often gets gassed to go for summer fun is an all terrain vehicle (ATV). As a new favorite, coverage of ATV’s are generally not covered by existing homeowners insurance policies, but Nationwide Insurance can also help fans of those powerful vehicles get the coverage they need.Regardless of the toys you use to have fun, making sure you are properly covered is a very wise idea.

Nationwide Insurance recently co-sponsored a survey with Tavis Smiley that showed that African-Americans in the D.C. area have no specific long-term financial plans despite having a strong interest in their future. Unfortunately, this is a trend that is occurring across the nation, and D.C. residents are more than likely to have afinancial advisor or plan.

In direct response to the outcome, Nationwide Insurance has teamed efforts with T.V. personality Smiley to assist those who long to get a grip on their future with theOn Your Side Tour. The tour will take them to four different cities where they will be providing complimentaryfree financial and retirement planning workshops that will provide those in need with the information required to properly plan for major expenses like sending their children to college or buying a home.

The hopes of the Nationwide Insurance and Tavis Smiley tour is to reverse the trend that was demonstrated in D.C., as the survey indicatedthat about two in three black residents do not have a written financial plan, and four of every five do not have a financial advisor as they think it is cost-prohibitive. With affordable options like Nationwide Insurance rates and the free informative tour, the team is going to prove otherwise.

Nationwide Arena May Be Up For Sale

Posted in Nationwide

In 2000, Nationwide Insurance opened its own ice skating arena (Nationwide Arena) specifically for housingthe Columbus Blue Jackets, a National Hockey League franchise. At this point, a sale of the Nationwide Insurance arena toFranklin Countyis being discussed among both those parties as well as the Blue Jackets and the local legislature.

Reasons for Selling

To purchase the Nationwide Insurance stadium, Franklin County is discussing increasing sin taxes to foot the bill. If passed, smokers and drinkers will need to pay up even more money for their favorite vices. The building may be sold so the ice hockeyteam can work towards getting a better lease.

This move has nothing to do with the stability of Nationwide Insurance and will have no affects on the Nationwide insurance rates charged to the local policyholders.

Over the past 8 decades, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company has evolved from asmall mutual auto insurer owned by policyholdersto a financialinsurance behemoth. Nationwide got their official start in 1925 when the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation incorporated the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company to specifically provide farmers with affordable insurance coverage.
