Nearly two dozen states are in support of a challenge to the health care reform law presented by Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder. The states all believe the law, passed in March 2010, is unconstitutional because it requires people to purchase health insurance.

A number of life insurance companies could lose their high ratings if the U.S. defaults on its debt, Standard & Poor’s warned recently. The credit rating agency has notified top insurers that their ratings are tied to U.S. ratings and therefore, could suffer if the U.S. defaults.

Health care experts say that the Medicare and Medicaid budget cuts that have been proposed by lawmakers to resolve the debt ceiling issue would only shift health costs, not eliminate them, according to a new Wall Street Journal story. So far, abut $350 billion in cuts have been proposed to the two programs over the next 10 years, but most think these government savings would actually become new costs for others.

A new survey released by the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) revealed that five cities are worse than others when it comes to aggressive towing practices. it was also revealed that these aggressive towing practices are often associated with drivers paying more in expenses related to auto insurance.

Auto manufacturer General Motors announced this week that it will be starting a pilot program that offers car buyers one year of free auto insurance. Currently, the new incentive program, offered through MetLife Auto and Home, will only be provided to customers in the Pacific Northwest.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sent out subpoenas to nine leading life insurance companies last month. A source close to the matter told Reuters on Tuesday that the subpoenas sent addressed the companies’ practices in identifying and paying out policies to deceased customers.

The nation’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, recently announced it will provide free legal support for Medicaid patients and their families. This is the first time in the company’s history that it will be interacting with the government’s public health insurance system in this way.

A new law in Georgia will allow state-licensed health insurance companies to sell policies offered across the nation that provide less coverage than the state requires. The new law is set to take effect on July 1 and is said to be among the first of its kind to be offered in the United States.
