Major auto insurer, Progressive, has launched a new comprehensive website that is optimized for mobile users, as well as those using the free iPhone app. Progressive Insurance’s decision to upgrade was largely due to mobile phone user complaints that mobile web experiences are not as great as they could be. It’s also great to see the company listening to customer needs, and the Progressive mobile site works much better.
There is no doubt that connecting to a site via a mobile phone very often offers a limited browsing experience. Many features are usually missing and some just don’t work as they should. However, according to Progressive, the new site will solve all of these problems and more.
Some of the features users of the iPhone app and mobile site will be able to enjoy include:
Some other features of the new site include:
The new site is just one of many changes Progressive Insurance has made in the past year. It has also recently found success with its My Rate, Pay as You Drive and Name Your Price programs.

Progressive Casualty Insurance Company has long been known as an innovator in the insurance industry. They constantly push the envelope to use technology as a means of promoting savings. Their latest, the Progressive “MyRate” program, is designed to monitor the driving behavior of customers in order to provide them with discounts on their car insurance premiums if they are deemed low-risk drivers. They also developed the Progressive “Pay as You Drive” program, which allows customers to identify their auto insurance budget – the number is then used to provide them with several car insurance policies based on their pricing requirements.

Progressive Group of Insurance Companies announced that it’s November net profit was down $80 million from the same month the year before, despite a growing number of auto insurance policies. This is mainly due to “a combination of sluggish prices and customers cutting back on coverage or holding back on buying newer, more expensive vehicles to insure.”
It’s also difficult for insurance companies to raise premiums in such an economically challenging time. Consumers are cutting back on everything, including auto insurance coverage.
Progressive Corp, one of the largest insurance providers in the United States, will offer car insurance coverage in Australia as well. The company will be known as Progressive Direct and be based out of Melbourne. Progressive currently insures both autos and motorcycles.

For years, Progressive has been known as a forerunner in usage-based insurance coverage. The MyRate program is the latest innovation from the idea. It works by having a device from Progressive installed into your vehicle, and based on the amount of miles you drive, the time of day you use the vehicle and the speed and braking you do, you may be entitled to a discount of anywhere from 5%-40% off your car insurance premium. The safest drivers who do not use their vehicles often can benefit most from this program.
The MyRate program is currently available to consumers in a total of 15 states, with Texas being the latest addition to the roster. According to Progressive spokesperson Susan Rouser, the company is actively pursuing a state by state approval process.

PAYD programs allow drivers to pay for their coverage based on the number of miles they’ve driven, rather than looking at zip codes, age, past driving record, and other components that can have varying affects on premium costs. This means, drivers will be judged based on their current driving habits, rather than their past.
Different PAYD programs have employed different techniques to collect the miles each car has driven. Some of these have come under scrutiny because they are viewed as intrusive. While some companies choose to take odometer readings, others may go as far as using GPS systems to calculate miles. Progressive’s method of data collection points to telemetry devices, which are not too far off from the GPS concept.
All-in-all, programs like Progressive’s MyRate allow drivers to take a cheaper option for car insurance, especially if they don’t do a lot of driving. Since it’s an optional service, it’s up to the driver to decide whether privacy is enough of an issue to bypass the benefits of the program.

Auto insurance rates are determined at least in part by the actuarial model, and your car insurance company uses various factors such as your age and your driving record to assess the likelihood of you getting in an accident. But with the advent of new technology, it may now be possible to base your auto insurance rate on your personal driving behavior, rather than the behavior of your actuarial cohort. What if an auto insurer could track your actual mileage, speed, and adherence to the laws of traffic? This concept, called Pay-As-You-Drive, or PAYD, is one that is getting traction among American insurers.
Drivers who choose to sign up for the PAYD plan receive a device that plugs into their car and measures their mileage, how and when the car is being driven, and even whether the car is being maintained properly. Drivers who are using their car less often, at less risky times, and in less risky ways may be subject to a discount auto insurance premium.
One insurer, Progressive Insurance, has introduced a PAYD auto insurance program in several states, including Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland and New Jersey. Progressive claims that drivers can save up to 25% on their auto insurance, but bad drivers could find their premiums go up as well – even as much as 9%.
Since the Brookings Institute conducted a comprehensive study of the PAYD system in the state of California, and concluded that PAYD is not only efficient, but also promotes safe driving, you can expect more insurers to be rolling out similar programs in next few years. Commercial fleet PAYD plans are already in place in Europe and Australia and will probably arrive stateside in the near future, as well.

Progressive’s “Name Your Price” is the company’s exclusive online tool that allows customers to decide what they would like to pay for on their auto insurance. It works by allowing shoppers to enter basic information about themselves and their vehicles on the company’s website.
After the information is entered, the customer gets to “Name Your Price,” then an available package of coverages, limits and deductibles will be provided closest to the price the customer enters. Customers also have the option of dragging a slider bar from left to right to see how coverage options change based on adjustments in the price they’ve selected.
For auto insurance customers in a financial crunch, an option to name their own price can bring on a sense of freedom and empowerment, which may be why the technology helped the company rank so highly on the list. With families looking for any way possibly to cut back on expenses, comparison-shopping online and looking for discounts are all great ways for customers to get the most bang for their buck.

Once a policyholder selects the MyRate program and agrees to the terms and conditions, they are provided with a tracking kit that includes a sensor. The sensory device then gets plugged into the OBD-II port in your vehicle, and your driving habits are monitored and the information is evaluated to see if you qualify for savings. Progressive encourages participants to drive as they normally would without the tracking device. Additionally, after the information has been uploaded, MyRate members can immediately track their projected renewal rate by logging in directly to Progressive’s website.
The sensor included with the tracking device monitors several points to evaluate your overall driving performance, including:
There is no GPS feature on the hardware as Progressive is not really interested in where the person is driving the vehicle, just how they are doing it.
The MyRate sensor can only be installed on cars that were manufactured after 1996. The on-board diagnostics (OBD) port was not a mandatory feature for car manufacturers prior to that year.
